PREMISE: Tobit is an observant Dutch Jew living in Amsterdam. He lives correctly, giving alms and burying the dead. In spite of his good works, Tobit is struck blind. Concurrent with Tobit’s story is that of Sarah, daughter of one of Tobit’s distant relative, whose seven successive husbands are each killed by a demon on their wedding night. When Tobit and Sarah pray to God for deliverance, God sends the angel Raphael to act as intercessor. Tobit regains his sight, and Sarah marries Tobit’s son Tobias. The story closes with Tobit’s thanksgiving and an account of his death. This is actually a Jewish short story possibly dating from Persian times in some Bibles is the book of Tobit, named after the father of its hero.

Pre-writing for Forest People

At any rate, give the same kind of thought (if you haven’t yet) to your major secondary characters as you are giving to your hero and villain.

If you didn’t do a step outline, then you may still have work to do regarding your supporting characters—everyone other than your hero and villain. In the hero’s journey paradigm, for example, major supporting characters are identified as “hero’s helpers” and “villain’s helpers”—that is, supporting characters that are important must be related to the central conflict in some way, which means they are in relationship to one or both of the major players, the hero and villain (antagonist).

You already should have done most of your pre-writing activity with your paradigm chart and possibly with your step outline as well.

Those of you who read this may want to move on to the more comprehensive electronic version, which includes a large number of features in hypertext that are too cumbersome to include in a linear book. Information about the electronic Screenwright is at:

Although I prefer the electronic version, the paperback is the text I use in my university classes. As the ebook got updated over recent years, I found myself bringing in more and more handouts to class during the term. One reason for publishing a new edition is to reduce the necessity for this. I decided to give the new paperback a different title in order to emphasize that it is more than a revised edition.

In the years since its first edition, the ebook Screenwright has grown significantly, both in its features and content and in the quantity and quality of its examples. It was time to include some of these in an updated paperback. This is the electronic version of same.
